I agree that without a proper working definition of consciousness we can't attribute such a capacity to a matrix-multiplying machine. At the same time, AI is growing in leaps and bounds, and is continuing to surprise researchers in its capacities. This is of course no proof, but certainly a suggestion that we should at least think about the social consequences of us accidentally creating AI systems which have some form of consciousness, even if it's primitive.
